Roman and I come from "opposite" perspectives on the same thing. He talks about "self-actualizing," based originally on Maslow's work. I basically take the Popeye the Sailor approach: we are what we are and that's all that we are. I admit I shudder when I see the name Ayn Rand (although I never read her) But it is interesting to see the evolution of ideas like the ones I was interested in during the 70s - 80s which were primarily based on the teaching of Gurdjieff—another piece of work...
Mac's a really really good writer who is able to put the cluster f-- that's going on these days in perspective—similar to Heather Cox Richardson but without the history. The essays are long and comprehensive but, unlike Richardson or Robert Hubbell or Robert Reich (who, can get overwhelming...at lest for me), he just does them once a week so you don't feel the urgency to "keep up."
